Intensive Care Nephrology - Beyond BASIC

Jointly developed by the BASIC collaboration (The Chinese University of Hong Kong) and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), this international course has been conducted in New Zealand, Australia and Abu Dhabi, China, United Kingdom and India to equip doctors working in critical care with relevant skills and knowledge in nephrology. This is a pre conference workshop of the SG-ANZICS conference 2015 and open only to registrants of the SG-ANZICS conference.

This 1.5 - 2 day course will provide a forum for residents and trainees from nephrology and critical care medicine to interact and will disseminate updated evidence based best practices to the clinicians. The course has several components; including a pre and post course MCQ test, comprehensive structured lectures, demonstrations, small group discussions and practical skill stations and hands on interaction with dialysis machines at several skill station.

Participants can expect to complete the course with a thorough knowledge of conditions causing AKI, strategies for prevention and detection, supportive and disease specific therapies and renal replacement strategies and troubleshooting. They will be able to then deploy this knowledge in general, acute care and critical care areas.

Number of participants will be limited to ensure adequate interaction among faculty and participation.

Target Audience: The provider course is targeted at residents and trainees from nephrology, internal medicine, respiratory medicine and critical care medicine.
It also serves as a refresher course for nephrology and intensive care specialists.
It is suitable for senior ICU/Renal High Dependency Unit nurses.

    • AKI (acute kidney injury) epidemiology and outcome
    • AKI definations staging, diagnosis, complications, work up and management
    • Types of AKI including contrast induced nephropathy, septic AKI, rhabdomyolysis and abdominal compartment syndrome
    • Chronice renal failure in critical care and its specific management in the ICU, including care of the post transplant patient

The course consists of manual for pre-course reading, pre-course test, lectures, skill stations and post course test. Participants are expected to complete their pre course reading and MCQ test so that they benefit maximally from this course.
